ant

May 1, 2005. I rode from Boston to Holliston to visit Mike Flanigan of ANT Bikes and see his shop. Like a jerk I didn't actually take any pics of the man himself. Anyhow, beautiful backwoods plus ANT, of course.

bike1

This is my bike. It's a 1987 Fuji Tivoli converted to fixed gear (42/17 gearing). The frame's a bit large for me, so I have to run the seat a little low. It's not quite as dirty as it looks, but it's close. That's a MTB mud shield on the front and a jerry rigged clip-on fender in the back. My clearances are too tight to properly fit fenders. Check the closeups of pedal strike damage in the last two photos.

bike2

My current (June 2004) bike.
  • Frame: 2001 Fuji Track.
  • Drivetrain:
    • Rear Wheel
      • Suzue Pro Max laced to Mavic Open Pro Rim
      • 16t 1/8" Shimano Dura Ace
      • Specialized Armadillo tire, never gotten a flat
    • Crankset
      • 170mm Bulletproof BMX cranks
      • 48t GT chainring
    • Chain: 1/8" nickel-plated KMC
  • Stem & Bars: Retro Cinelli quill stem and bars
  • Front Wheel: Taken from '87 Fuji Tivoli, also Armadillo tire
  • Seat: Generic seat post and Selle Italia Expedia. Less painful than advertised, but lacking the cachet of my now-deceased perforated white Turbo.
  • Brake: Dia Compe from the same '87 Fuji Tivoli
  • Pedals: MKS GR-9, the best pedal ever for us toe-clipped soft-solers.
  • Paint: Various brands of orange spray paint from Krylon and Ace.

My trip for the Detroit Clubhouses' grand openings in October 2003. Be sure to check out the pictures of Belle Isle and the Detroit turtles.
Native people considered Mackinac Island with its towering bluffs a sacred place. Legend holds that Mackinac Island became the first land to appear after the waters of the Great Flood receded. The Great Hare, Michibou, retrieved a grain of sand from the lake bed beneath the waters and blew on it until it expanded into an island. According to the legend , fishermen saw in the glimmering waters near Mackinac Island the image of a turtle's back rising from the water and named this place Land of the Great Turtle.

neponset1

Late April 2004. I went on a ride along the Neponset River Greenway, too bad I accidentally changed my camera settings halfway through the ride. I took some photos on the way down and some on the way back but I've reordered most of them so that it's more along the lines of what you'd see starting at Tenean Beach and going South. As a result you may notice that the weather seems to go back and forth between sunny and cloudy. These photos include an old mill and the Mattapan trolly. Not pictured is me getting wicked lost on my way back from Tenean to Jackson Square.
